Cine CHT (Chittagong Hill Tracts) is one of our projects that we focus to bring cinemas to the remote Indigenous Peoples territories through screening Indigenous languages films, as well as world popular cinema . Furthermore, we encourage Indigenous filmmakers through delivering their films to Indigenous population, whether they live in remote areas or cities.
As pilot project, at the end of 2020, we screened films in two different villages, one in Tripura village and another in Mro village under Lama upazila of Bandarban Hill District, CHT. People, including children, were extremely excited to see Charlie Chaplin’s 100 Years old movie “City Lights”. It was their first time meeting Charlie Chaplin. We also projected Kokborok (Tripura) film in the Tripura village called Dushari Para.
Thereafter, we have been screening films to different remote areas in Chittagong Hill Tracts with the aim to create a connection with films and rural people and bring the big screens to the community.
The Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) region in Bangladesh is home to several indigenous communities, each with their own distinct languages, cultures, and traditions. The main indigenous groups in the Chittagong Hill Tracts include the Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Mro, Tanchangya, Chak, Bom, Khumi Khyang, Pankhoa, and Lushai. These communities have historically inhabited the hilly and forested areas of southeastern Bangladesh.
Ruwang Collective Arts is committed to broadening the scope of creative activities within the community, aiming to foster a vibrant cultural scene. This includes the strategic planning of film screenings across various locations in Chittagong Hill Tracts and potentially extending these initiatives beyond its borders. Such endeavors can serve to engage and inspire a wider audience, contributing to the enrichment of cultural experiences and the promotion of artistic expression as a whole.
